The History of Mangosteen

It is said that Queen Victoria offered a sizable prize to anyone who could bring an edible mangosteen back to England, due to its rumored ability to offer youth. This is how it got the nickname "queen of fruits"

Where does mangosteen history begin?

The mangosteen is believed to have originated many centuries ago in the Sunda Islands, and later spread throughout Southeast Asia. The mangosteen fruit grows on an evergreen tree with leaves that can grow up to 10 inches in length. The tree grows very slowly, but can reach heights of up to 80 feet.

Historically, in these parts of the world the mangosteen has been prized not only for its delicious taste but for its medicinal purposes.

Across these regions folk medicine and traditional medical healers use the mangosteen as a healing and preventive aid.

In South America, tea made from the rind of the mangosteen fruit is used as a tonic for fatigue, low energy and depression.

In India and China, the rind had been used for centuries as anti-microbial and anti-parasitic treatments for dysentery and other infectious diseases.

In Thailand, villagers have used the mangosteen for centuries to treat infected wounds, skin disorders such as eczemas and psoriasis, and for malaria and urinary tract infections.

In Indonesia, dentists use the mangosteen to control pain and swelling instead of pain killing drugs.

In the Phillipines, the rind is brewed in tea to control fever and to provide relief for sore muscles and joints.

The Recent History of Mangosteen

Over the last 3 decades, scientists have begun to research the mangosteen to see if there is any truth to the folklore.

Over that time a great wealth of knowledge has come out of their research.

Scientists have found the same results as the ancient healers. Mangosteen helps to alleviate the symptoms of many ailments that we face.

Bringing Mangosteen to Market

The mangosteen is a very delicate fruit. It can only be harvested twice a year and must be picked ripe to get all the xanthones. It has a fresh life cycle of 3 days. So, exporting the fruit around the world is very difficult. Xango has agreements with many growers who pick the ripe fruit and quickly fast freeze the whole fruit, locking out ice crystals which damage the freshness of the fruit, while locking in the essential qualities of the mangosteen pericarp (rind), pulp, and seeds.  This is important because most of the nutrients are found in the pericarp. The fruit is then shipped to the bottler who makes a puree of the whole fruit. Due to the bitterness of the pericarp, other fruit juices are blended with the puree to create an exquisite tasting juice. The bottler is Wild Flavors who represents other companies including Nestles, Kraft and SoBe juice. What is unique about our company's relationship with Wild Flavors is that Wild Flavors so much believed in this product that they are in partnership with Xango. And Wild Flavors provided the financial backing not often provided new start up companies.  The quality process is also important and freshness is check frequently through out the process to ensure that each bottle has sufficient xanthones and is the highest quality product available.
